Medicare and FEP Blue Retiree Plan

Medicare & Your FEP Blue Coverage

  • You are not required to enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B to remain eligible for your FEP Blue plan.
  • However, enrolling in both Medicare Part A and Part B may significantly reduce your medical out-of-pocket costs.
  • In many situations, members who have both Medicare Part A and Part B, along with FEP Blue may have little to no out-of-pocket costs for covered services.

Enrolling in Medicare

Most people qualify for premium-free Medicare Part A.

If You Decide to Enroll in Medicare Part B:

  • Visit our How to Enroll in Medicare page.
  • Follow the step-by-step enrollment instructions provided there.
  • Contact Social Security if you need assistance with the Medicare enrollment process.

Important: Delaying Medicare Part B

If you choose not to enroll in Medicare Part B when first eligible:

  • You may be subject to a 10% late enrollment penalty for each full 12-month period you were eligible but did not enroll.
  • The penalty may be permanent and added to your monthly Part B premium.
  • You may need to wait for the General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31) to enroll.

Medicare Part B Premiums

Before enrolling in Medicare Part B, it is important to understand:

  • Medicare Part B requires a monthly premium.
  • Premium amounts are based on your modified adjusted gross income from two years prior.
  • Higher-income individuals may pay an additional premium amount.
  • Review the current Income Levels and Premiums chart for the latest Part B premium information.
